R.N.M.T.A. News

The Royal Navy Muay Thai Association is dedicated to teaching pure Muay Thai to all service personnel that wish to learn the art from beginners to experienced students. The Association is recognised at the highest level with the Association registered in Thailand with A.I.T.M.A. and as an associate member of the World MuayThai Federation the Association is renown as one of excellence to study Muay Thai. The Royal Navy Muay Thai Association teaches the Association Institue Thai Martial Arts (A.I.T.M.A.) syllabus which is recognised and has been created by the Grand Masters in Thailand to include a full range of both sport and traditional techniques giving the student a full understanding of Muay Thai. The Royal Navy Muay Thai Association is an associate member of the English Muay Thai Federation (E.M.F.) allowing the students to take part in all amateur competition from local inter-unit to world champioships under the World Muay Thai Federation. --------------- The origins of the R.N.M.T.A. started out as a civilian training camp in 2006 training 3 times a week in local halls in Gosport for the local public. In January 2007, Navy personel that were already students of the camp asked if it was possible to start a Navy class. After much planning the camp was renamed as The Hanuman Muay Thai Academy aimed directly at the Royal Navy and talks with the Commodore at H.M.S. Sultan in Gosport, a class started there once a week. The camp grew fast at H.M.S. Sultan and another class at H.M.S. Collingwood followed shortly after The Royal Navy classes grew in strength and at the end of 2008 arrangements were made to take the next step by moving the Royal Navy classes from Gosport across the harbour to the main naval establishment at H.M.N.B. Portsmouth, in an aid to promoting the art better at a highest level with a view to becoming an association. January 2009 saw the Royal Navy classes in H.M.N.B Portsmouth start very well with intrest from the Royal Navy sports commision being noted almost imeidiately. In May 2009 objectives were set and on 9th June 2009 the first officail meeting of the Royal Navy Muay Thai Association was held at H.M.S. Temeraire. With the Headquarters fully establish at Portsmouth now, we are now traveling the country slowly offering Grass Roots within the Royal Navy with the intention to open further camps around the country. This is the first time a military service of the United Kingdom has welcomed Muay Thai and it is with great honour that our Academy (The Royal Navy Muay Thai Association) has been chosen as a pinnicle to introduce the art. The Academy is named after Hanuman (the warrior monkey king) famous in the Thai epic the Ramakien, and renown for his fighting spirit. Known in the story for being a magnificant warrior in battle with great courage, pride and loyalty to King Rama. The Royal Navy Muay Thai Association is a Traditional Muay Thai Academy of learning, which in time hopes to have Camps around the country.
